Hello,

I have got a Macbook Pro from the year 2009. It's a mid 2009 version with a 2.66GHz Core 2 Duo CPU inside together with 4GB of RAM and a 320GB HDD (bah ).

This computer has a really strange problem. The main problem is that the system doesn't boot in any way.

-Using OSX Lion USB stick to install a new version of OSX Lion doesn't work. I don't see the drive listed in the 'select a drive to install'. But, I can see the drive in Disk Utility. The funny thing here is: SMART status is changeable. Sometimes it's 'Verified' sometimes 'Not supported'.

-PRAM reset doesn't fix the problem.

-Drive is recognizable with the option/alt key if you see the grey screen.

-I can't format the HDD. Somewhere near the end of the erase process I get an error. "Error while formatting drive. Can't unmount drive"

-Placing the HDD in my Macbook Pro (13 inch early 2011) doesn't result in any errors. I can just boot the system and do whatever I want to do with it.

-If I place my HDD (MBP 2011 13' 320GB hdd) with a fresh installation of OSX Lion inside the 2009 MBP, it's not being recognized while booting or in Disk Utility. I think this has something to do with (driver) incompability.

-I have cleaned the S-ATA cable with caution because the MBP was dirty inside.

-In Disk Utility I can find the drive but with the command 'system_profiler' in Terminal I can't.

-Macbook Pro has got the latest EFI Bootrom version
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009) MacBookPro5,3 MBP53.00AC.B03 (EFI 1.7)

What I think is wrong:
I assume something is wrong with the S-ATA cable and/or controller.

What I have seen in the past while booting:
-Folder with question mark
-The stop sign (this one persists) and the spinning circle

I hope someone can help me with this frustrating problem.
