I have a recent problem with my MacBook Pro 2010. It is hooked up to a monitor via Mini-DisplayPort, and the monitor has other computers hooked to it via HDMI, VGA, DVI. The problem is that currently when I switch the monitor to receive via Display Port, the monitor says "no signal". I've learned over the years to provoke the MBP by moving/clicking the mouse or touching the keyboard, and that mostly worked. Now, it has great difficultly if at all.

The recent change I did was my old power adapter broke, so I replaced it - with a 85W replacement. I didn't replace it with a Apple-brand ($80? c'mon). It seems that for the Display Port on the MBP to work properly, it needs more power than the battery gives it. (BTW, without the power adapter, I don't think it EVER sends out enough juice through the Display Port to have the monitor recognize the signal.)

So, currently my tactic is that I drain the battery to about 50%, then plug in the power adapter, and even then it takes some work/time to get the monitor to respond, but it eventually does. I think it's because only the adapter gives the Display Port enough juice. But once the battery gets charged, it's like the adapter starts giving less juice, and that affects the Display Port, etc. and then the monitor drops, saying "no signal" again.

I've decided to get a real Apple power adapter (refurbished, I can't shell out $80) and see if that helps.

Does anyone have any thoughts about this?
