I have Macbook air 2013 and looking to upgrade as I want retina display.

Should I get a old RMBP 2015(under warranty till August 2017 @ $900 or buy new nTB RMBP 2016 @1600 ?

Usage - Basic school work and web browsing.

There are thousands of active posts covering this, but I wouldn't call the 2015 old, more like classic (The one with ports :D)

Since for usage, you stated "basic school work and web browsing", I'd say get the 2015 one. If you're crazy about the Apple ecosystem and new hardware is like really one of your hobbies, get the 2016 one but do NOT go into debt for a notebook.

Also with the 2015 one, you'll have some budget left for:
- an external harddrive for Time Machine backups
- a solid sleeve
- an insurance against damage/theft outside of the house
- maybe an extra magsafe adapter

Aside from the warranty, what does the new machine give you over the old one that you want?

New form factor and good looking design.
Better screen color accuracy. Certainty that all parts are geniune inside.

If that's worth 700 dollars then you have your answer?

Given that the MBA is a sealed computer, what makes you think they're not genuine inside?

If the 2015 is in good shape and good working order, there's no comparison.

Buy the 2015 and keep $700 in your pocket!

School work and web browsing I'd go with a 12" MacBook. . maybe even the fist gen model. even the base 13" are really overkill for your application.

With that being the case, anything above that is probably overkill and will meet your needs more than sufficiently.

Macbook Air is what I have.

Used Macbook pro is what I am going to buy from a dealer who repairs computers
