MBP 2016 randomly losing/gaining 40+GB

Hi everyone,
I'm trying to prep my MBP for bootcamp but for some reason the amount of free disk space oscillates wildly. When I go through a cleaning session I'll end up with 120 GB free but if I restart it suddenly drops down to 80. Does anyone know how to fix this?
