I bought my MacBook Pro 13'' (no Touchbar) this past Wednesday, aiming to trade in my excellent-condition MBP 13'' 2015 model, and I have to say that the battery life is noticeably bad.

Maybe I've missed the lowering of the bar in successive models, but is going from 100 - 90% in 50 minutes from just web-browsing normal? I'd expect it be in the low to mid-90s with just web-browsing, and I'd hate to see what it's like if I was using it for gaming, or watching a movie.

I've looked in the forums and seen other people complain about battery problems, so I'm wondering if I just got a lemon, or this is the new (sub)normal.

You lost 10% battery life in almost an hour of use. Apple advertises 10 hours of battery life. You're experiencing 8-1/3 hours usage. We don't know your screen brightness or the kinds of websites you used. Seems legit to me.

  1. Seems quite normal to me.
  2. You can’t take a representative battery life statistic from as little as a 10% discharge anyway. Try running it flat and see how it goes.
  3. Newly-set-up MacBooks do a lot of background processing which consumes more power.
  4. There isn’t a 2018 non-Touch Bar MacBook Pro.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone: I'm actually scrutinizing the battery performance more on a time vs battery vs usage basis (as well as will do the same with my old MacBook Pro 2015), and will post the unscientific results here tomorrow

Yeah, so I went in looking to buy the latest MacBook Pro without a TouchBar, only to realize later that only the TouchBar MacBook Pros have been upgraded: the non-TouchBar MacBook Pros are...2017 models.

Still a good MacBook Pro, but not 2018. I've updated the title of this thread.
[doublepost=1532836815][/doublepost]Here's a breakdown of my usage today of the MBP 2017 13'' (no TouchBar):

upload_2018-7-28_20-56-22.png

Here's my usage:
5:00 PM 100% google sheets, youtube browsing
5:30 PM 97% work emails, docs
5:38 PM 95% airbnb
5:48 PM 93% shopping
5:50 PM 92% shopping
5:53 PM 91% shopping
5:55 PM 90% shopping
6:00 PM 89% youtube vid
6:05 PM 88% google sheets
6:10 PM 86% excel online
6:17 PM 84% played youtube clip in background, while browsing
6:29 PM 81% online browsing
7:37 PM 80% woke up macbook from sleep
7:48 PM 77% netflix
7:57 PM 75% netflix
8:16 PM 71% netflix, web-browsing
8:20 PM 70% web-browsing
8:32 PM 66% youtube vid
8:40 PM 64% web-browsing
8:54 PM 60% youtube

Summary:

I'm not sure what happened between the first couple of days of ownership, versus today: the battery life has noticeably improved, and you can see that the drainage actually isn't that bad. I'm going to assume that the first few days relate to what others have mentioned, where laptop indexes initially.

For those who care, I'll do a follow-up, but my battery anxiety has gone down for today.

What I would suggest you to do as I do for every device I get , is to reinstall Mac OS from the start so you can be sure the Mac OS is completely fresh. Also try the turbo boost switcher. With it I can squeeze another 1-2 hours of normal usage of battery life as I don't use cpu demanding stuff on mine.
