Folks,

I have a 2017 15" and Apple has just replaced my logic board. As a result, I got a new top case with a keyboard, and it feels SO much more comfortable than the one I had. It feels almost like a 2019 Butterfly.

I was happy until I noticed that the RIGHT SHIFT is not functioning as expected: it works, but does not click when I type. To me, the key is obviously faulty. So I have 2 choices:

1) take it back and ask them too replace the keyboard (they will probably do so), but what if this time they will give me a different keyboard (apparently, not all keyboards are the same)?
2) suck it up and live with it in hopes that I will get used to it or the SHIFT key will improve (I suspect that it will not improve, but die sooner than other keys).

What do you think?

Unfortunately, it is my understanding that only the 2018 models and later get 2019 replacement keyboards. The KBs prior to 2018 are not compatible.

Someone can please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks.

Take it back. The top case includes the battery, keyboard, trackpad, and Al top. It is one replaceable unit glue and rivited together.
Also, the issue may be as simple as the keyboard connector is not seated all the way in.

It seems that you are right, but there are different keyboard vendors and it seems that key stiffness, sound and travel differ considerably, and there is not way of knowing of what vendor my next keyboard will be coming from.

Unlikely. Because all the keys around SHIFT work fine: RETURN, RIGHT ARROW, etc.

I just got my 2018 back and the keyboard is WAY different in feel and sound. I believe they gave me the 2019 board. If not, I need to stop making things up.

2016/2017 MBPs will have the keyboard replaced with 2017 MBP keyboards.

2018/2019 MBPs will have the keyboard replaced with 2019 MBP keyboards.

Just out of curiosity, how would someone who got a replacement butterfly keyboard on their 2018 model know whether they got a 2018 or a 2019 as a replacement?

Took it to the Apple Store and my genius partially fixed the key.
The genius said that they have a device to slightly adjust individual keys.
The key is tolerable now and I have 90 days to decide if I want to replace the entire top case.

It seems that even same year keyboards differ a bit. Probably depends on what assembly line/vendor it came from. Or maybe, Apple has slightly changed blueprints, who knows!
