Hello

I have a MBP 13 non touch bar 2017. I've been a Mac owner since 2005 but this is my first Mac laptop.

I'm happy with it except for one thing:

It randomly emits a popping sound from the right speaker (and sometimes the left).

  • What I'm trying to work out is if this 'working as intended'?
  • And if so, does anyone know what's causing this?

From researching here and on the web, I understand that it might be something to do with the audio system sleeping, so:

  • Is this something that I should get used to
  • Or is a fault with the unit that I have?

The sound is pretty annoying and I've never experienced anything like this with any of my iMacs so I can't believe that this is 'working as intended'.

Any help is gratefully received.

I'd suggest a trip down to an Apple Store if it's convenient. Is the OS up to date? Have you tried resetting the NVRAM/PRAM? I recall on the 2016/17 MacBooks there was a problem with speakers getting blown by a faulty OS update. If they've blown then it's too late but obviously if it's within warranty then it should be no problem. There's a few threads on here about blown speakers but I suggest you have a look yourself to make sure the exact symptoms match.

Thanks so much. The speakers are fine, it’s just the weird popping/pinging sound that randomly occurs.

The unit I have now is actually a replacement unit - my previous unit had exactly the same issues so I was starting to think that this annoying sound was simply a ‘feature’.
