I'm currently using a Dell U2711 with my 13" late 2013 MBP. It's working great at the screen's native resolution of 2560x1440. But I'm looking into buying a new screen in the coming year or so, probably combined with a new 15" MBP.
Apple ships the 5K screen, but it's 3 times more expensive than a decent 4K screen. That made me wonder. How are these screens set up by default, if I hook them up to the MBP without any software tweaks? Does the 5K screen go into 2560x1440 HiDPI? How about the 4K screens, do they go into full HD, HiDPI?
I read that since El Capitan, it's no longer possible to set a higher resolution than the screen native for HiDPI, i.e. 4K screens can do max full HD in HiDPI. Is that still the case in Mojave? Or would I require software tools like SwitchResX?
