It seems that when I step away from my computer while it is on battery power, the display dims but the computer doesn't actually sleep. That means that within a short time, the battery drains completely (unlike if I close the lid).

Is that expected behavior? It seems like my MacBook Pro didn't always behave that way.

Something just occurred to me. Could hdapm cause this?

Open a new Terminal window and write pmset -g while running the mbp on battery

Then look out for displaysleep variable and check whether it's 0 (imposed by xxx) or not :) In case it's 0 then you should blame a particular application (xxx) to be the culprit !
