MBP Backlit Keyboard doesn't turn off when lights are on

I have an early 2011 MBP, and the backlit keyboard doesn't ever turn off if I have it set to automatically adjust. I can turn it off manually with the F5 button, but it doesn't ever come on/turn off depending on the lighting in the room.

My old MacBook Pro (2008) worked perfectly in that regard. Did they change something, or is there something wrong with my computer?

Whether the lights in my room are on or off my MBP 2011 keyboard lights up but only when I press a key or touch the trackpad. Then the keys stay on for 10 seconds before turning off.
