Just received my MacBook Pro today and the latch that releases the battery cover protrudes slightly on one side and is more recessed on other side. Is this normal or should I have Apple swap out the latch? Thanks.

You can keep the sarcasm to yourself. I don't know about you, but when I spend $2500 for something it should be perfect when I take it out of the box.

Absolutely. If it bothers you, bring it back to a local Apple store and attempt to exchange it. Hopefully you live by one, and hopefully they'll honor your request.
