I just received my new MacBook Pro, which I bought online from Apple directly.

When I turn on the computer, just before the familiar start-up tone, I hear a strange loud buzzing sound. It's kind of similar to the sound my old Mac makes after I turn in on from sleep-mode, but it's louder and harsher-sounding. It happens every time. It only lasts a second or two, then the start-up tone kicks in and the computer starts up normally.

I've had various Macs in the past, and I always only heard one clean tone at start-up.

Does anyone have a similar experience with a MacBook Pro or any advice as to what that may be? Should I send the computer back?

Thank you so much!

Yes, I think it's coming from the optical drive.

It kind of sounds as if it's trying to boot something, but there is currently no CD or DVD in the optical drive. Also, the noise is much harsher and more metallic-sounding.

Is there no reason to be concerned at all?

Thank you for any advice you can give me!

Nope, it's perfectly normal :) Please refer to this official statement from Apple:

Portable computers: Noise when powering on or waking from sleep is normal

When powering on or waking from sleep, some components in your portable computer may make unfamiliar noises. For instance, when optical (even if there is no disc inserted) and hard drives first receive power and make themselves ready for use a whirring or buzzing sound may be present for a few seconds. Additionally, fans in the computer may start off at full speed, but will taper off as the computer continues to start up or finish waking from sleep.
