How do you check for stuck pixels? Can you just "tell" by looking at your screen?

I would just use it.
Check for dead pixels (look at the screen, if you don't see 'em don't worry about it.)
Check the the superdrive can burn disks
Check About this Mac to see that it is correct.
Check the ports (USB, speaker, DVI, etc.) to see that they work.
Which model did you get?
I always completely reinstall my new Mac. That way I get to choose the printer drivers, languages, apps and so forth to be on my hard drive. It just seems neater for me to do it that way. I don't see the point in installing some third party app to remove language files.

Is it worth it thouhg, monolingual download install and run - 5 minutes,
format and reinstall OS-X, then patch everything - 2 hours.
I choose monolingual. Printer drivers you can delete by hand in 30 seconds, if you are that worried about the extra gig of space.
I would reccommend going through the system just having a fiddle, changing settings and generally getting used to the system-especially System Preferences-it can really save time later when you dont have to look for things.
I would also user either Monolingual (careful not to remove Rosetta!) or reinstall the system to get rid of printer drivers, iApps, languages, etc.
Get Perian and Flip4Mac and you're set with Quicktime for basically everything.
For productivity I use iWork '06 but Office is good. If you're on the cheap try OpenOffice.
I like Uno for unifying the system.
