MBP doesn't recognize LG DS325 projector

I have a 2010 MBP, 15.4. I plug in an LG DS325 projector (native res. 800x600) and I get no response from the laptop. I set the laptop to 800x600 screen resolution...nothing. I put the laptop to sleep.....nothing. I restart the computer....nothing. I cycle the projector....nothing. I change resolution to every option available on the machine....nothing. Mirror never comes up as an option because the machines are not communicating or recognizing one another. Is it really this difficult to do this on a $2000 computer? I have the right plug so that is not an issue. What do I need to do for this machine to see this projector?
