Hi,
Recently, the hard drive (Hitachi 500GB 5400RPM, stock) on my september 2009 Macbook Pro broke down, and OS X's disk repair tool was unable to repair it. Thus, I purchased a new Seagate Momentus 500GB 7200.4 drive and installed it in my computer. When I tried to format it using the Erase function in disk utility on the OS X install disc, however, Disk Utility was unable to recognize it. The system profiler utility couldn't see it either.
Thinking that the problem probably was either that the new disk was faulty or that there was a hardware error with my computer, I first tried to hook the new drive up to a Windows computer. It was instantly recognized, and I formatted it to FAT32. It still wasn't recognized when I reinstalled it into the MBP. I then installed my old corrupt drive back into the computer, and it immediately was recognized by Disk Utility.
I'm quite puzzled by this, as far as I can see I've ruled out the possibility that the new disk is defect (recognized by Windows), as well as the possibility that my mac has a hardware flaw (it recognizes my old hard drive).
What am I missing? Any thoughts are highly appreciated.
