How do I disable my MBP LCD when I'm using an external monitor?

With the lid open?

You can't turn it off if that is what you mean. You can turn the brightness down all the way but that won't mimic the effect of it being off as in clamshell mode.

To enter clamshell mode :

Connect external mouse and keyboard via bluetooth or USB.

sleep machine with power source and display connected

wake machine with keystroke or mouse movement.

Enjoy.

There are more friendly tips and tricks in the manual.

I have an external mouse and keyboard connected. So I can't have the LCD off while running an external monitor? That sucks if I can't, I got the MBP just for this.

You can with the lid closed. Hook up your monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Then, close the lid on the MBP. Wait for it to completely enter sleep mode, then press some keys on the keyboard. The external display will come on as your primary monitor. (Clamshell mode)

Sorry new to OSX. What do you use to extract files beside zips?
