I'm sure it didn't used to do this, but my MBP (2.16GHz Core 2 Duo) fans seem to be on all the time, even though I'm not doing much. CPU at around 10%, and CPU temp is about 55 degrees C. Both fans always on at about 6000rpm, so it's pretty noisy.

I've tried an SMC reset, which doesn't seem to have helped.

Any ideas?

Have you used SMC Fan Control? That app changes defaults, If you haven't, you can try using it to return to defaults (2000 rpm), then maybe do another SMC reset.

Hmm. OK, I tried that. Installed SMC fan control and tried setting defaults (it showed defaults as 2000rpm so I tried saving them to 2100, etc). Doesn't seem to have any affect on my fans, which are still racing away at 6000rpm... can't get them lower than that.

D'oh. Worked it out. Seems I'd started placing my laptop right next to a wooden surface that was blocking the air vent. Apparently the fans are not triggered (soley) by the temperature of the CPU, but I guess by the amount of cool air flow into the machine.
