I'm currently using a MBP 2010 and looking to make a purchase on a fully upgraded MBP. But im wondering if it is better to wait for the 2018 version since its basically 3 months away. Should i spend the 4100$ now or get the base model Imac pro for 4999 or wait for the 2018 mbp and get that one fully upgraded? im using this strictly for 4k editing on fcp and adobe premiere pro cc. Also a lot of photo editing with photoshop and lightroom. My 2010 is way to slow rendering video and trying to preview the video on the software even when its 1080p is super choppy. ive been able to make it due for now though.

Current one will be able to handle it quite happily. 2018 version will likely have better specifications, but it won't really make that much difference day to day. Wait if you don't need one, but who told you it's 3 months away? Could be released next November for all we know.

If you don't need portability then an imac is a better buy for 4K editing, 5K screen means one to one pixels and space for your editing controls on screen, The graphics are much better even in the lower end iMacs and of course you can use lots of external storage easily on a desktop machine.

If you fancy the imac pro then go for it in December, but macook pro's are unlikely to be with us before may- june if you ask me.

iMac pro will have much more computing power than the MBP. even the updated one cos of TPD. But not in 3months, more like 12.

Thanks for the responses. Its been a while since I bought one 7 years. I was under the impression they came out with a early release each year and a mid year release. I was hoping for a feb-march release. Appreciate all the responses I'll wait to see the price range on the iMac pro next month

You won't need an imac pro and we already know they start at $5000.

If you want to go MBP you'll want the 560 graphics card and as much SSD space as you can afford.

Also due to slow silicon changes these days one update a year is normal, even a bonus with intel delays and AMD taking ages to release things.
