Recently I have been having my MBP 2011 freezing usually when I'm watching videos through VLC. The strange thing is that I can still move the mouse cursor.

My MBP specs are as below:
15" Hi-res Antiglare
2.0Ghz i7
8GB (third party kingston RAMs)
128GB Intel 320 SSD
6490m
Mountain Lion

I have tried the following:
Fresh install a new OS (Moved from Lion to Mountain Lion)
Ran Apple Hardware Test, test passed with no errors
Downgrading VLC to 1 version before

All of the above failed.
I do have AppleCare but as I use third party RAMs and SSD, I will like to know if the problem could possibly be caused by them?

Any ideas on what could cause such a problem?

At a time when you're experiencing slower performance, do this:
  1. Launch Activity Monitor
  2. Change "My Processes" at the top to "All Processes"
  3. Click on the CPU column heading once or twice, so the arrow points downward (highest values on top).
  4. Click on the System Memory tab at the bottom.
  5. Take a screen shot of the entire Activity Monitor window, then scroll down to see the rest of the list, take another screen shot
  6. Post your screenshots.

Thanks for taking the time. Unfortunately when it freezes i will have to force shutdown, there was no slow down or any symptoms prior to the freeze.

It's harder to diagnose without information. You might try resetting the SMC, but that's a shot in the dark. It won't hurt anything by trying.
