I have an early 2011 2.2 i7 15" MBP which I upgraded from 4Gb to 8Gb (Crucial) and 500Gb HDD to 256Gb SD (Crucial M4).
It's running 10.7.2 and fully patched. Never had any issues apart from a broken screen which was swapped out a few months ago by an Apple store. Fine since, and used regularly with a 22" Fujitsu screen with a Thunderbolt to VGA adapter.
I also recently bought a 27" thunderbolt display, which has also been patched to the latest firmware (as of saturday gone) via the app which installed on the MBP.
Since using the MBP with the screen (whenever I'm home at weekends), it intermittently, but with increasing frequency, hangs at shutdown or restart (continuous beachball though the screen sleeps and wakes fine - still with beachball). A hard power off is needed.
It has also, on a few occasions, hung at other times too - mainly when performing tasks on the external display such as screen grabs or even browsing for a file to upload via chrome to a website.
Setup is dual screen with 27" positioned 'above' the MBP screen.
I've not yet tried an OS reinstall / repair, but as the MBP works fine when not connected to the TB display I was dubious as to whether it was necessary.
There seem to be a couple of similar posts about this issue:

but no resolution. I stopped by a Genius bar for a quick chat with someone about this issue but all they could really recommend was phoning my local store and arranging for someone to remote in and troublefix.
I'm fairly new to Mac and OSX, long time windows user which I know how to dive into but I'm not that familiar with OSX so can anyone offer any advice on how to chase down the issue?
