I have a 2009 Unibody 2,66 15 inch MBP. I want to upgrade the hard drive. I was looking at WD Scorpio Black 750GB 7200 rpm. However I noticed that it is SATA. What is the difference between SATA and SATA II . Which hard drive would you recommend above 500 gb and preferably 7200rpm ? And will the scorpio black 750 gb fit in to my mbp ? (it is 9,5 mm in height).

sata2 is backwards compatible with sata, so it should work. as for the second question (750gig), i am unsure. you'd have to compare their physical size to see if it would fit.

I did not understand what you mean with " backwards compatible " . Should I buy SATA or SATA II ? Thanks

A lot of times sites won't mention the SATA# in their text. I think you're safe in any SATA drive made in the past 2 years though. :)

either will work with the mac. sata ii is obviously newer, and could be a bit faster in terms of data transfers.

I would definitely recommend the Momentus XT. It's not very expensive, and will make your Mac boot way faster. Just search for some vids on Youtube.

Momemtus XT has 500 gb maximum capacity =( I want 750 gb and 7200 rpm so i guess the only choice is Scorpio Black ?

9.5 mm will fit, it's the shortest drive you can get in a 2.5"

Your SATA controller will drop the speed of the drive to 1.5 Gb/s (SATA I) instead of SATA II (3.0 Gb/s)

At present, if you are considering the Momentus (as a member has suggested) I would suggest that you research the drive and issues with Macs. Seagate is working on alleviating issues that have been brought to their attention through firmware updates...YMMV.

Actually I am thinking of WD Scorpio Black 750 GB 7200 RPM. But the thing is it is not SATA II so I am not sure. But still it will be faster than the stock Hitachi 320gb 5400rpm probably.

Yeah the Scorpio Black 750 is SATA2. It doesn't have the 2 at the end of the header here, but SATA1 was only 1.5gbps and SATA2 is 3.0gbps. Wiki and Amazon screenshots are attached to show you what I mean. When you're looking online, look for the 3.0gbps and you know it's SATA2.
