So, I just picked up my first mac today at my local apple store (15" MBP - Base model) and I was just wondering, what is taking up so much space on the HD? The capacity is 111GB but only about 75GB was available when I booted up the machine. After transferring my music library (about 20GB) I'm left with only 54GB of free space. This has me a little worried/confused, so what's the deal here?

Thanks!

Garageband & the sample tracks, iDVD, MS Office trial, etc, etc. Just Spotlight Garageband and delete the .app and the sample track folders out, delete iDVD and the MS Office trial and you should pick up 5-6+ GB, at the least.

How do you delete programs in Mac OSX I know how to do in windows but not in Mac. I also noticed that on my 160 gb HD after the 1st day it came with like 140 gb I turned on.

You just throw them away, there are no uninstallers (or well, very few programs actually do have an uninstaller, system optimizer x does for instance, but no, generally not.)
