Therefore not a hardware issue.

Ive looked in everywhere I can think of to check for mutes etc and cant find anything. Ive reset PRAM still nothing.

Could really use some help here guys!

Definitely sounds like a software issue.

Does it work when booted to Safe Mode? (hold Shift while powering on, release once you see the gray Apple screen with a progress bar at the bottom)

Have you tried checking it in a different user account? You can enable the Guest account in "System Preferences > Users & Groups > Guest > Allow Guests to log on to this computer" for a quick check.

Have you tried reinstalling the OS? You can do so without wiping your data by booting to the recovery partition (hold Option when powering on and select Recover) and reinstalling 10.8. You should only lose data if you use Disk Utility to erase the volume beforehand.
