MBP Locking up and freezing constantly

I have never had an issue like this before, but my machine is locking up and freezing to the point where I have to do a hard reboot nearly once an hour. I initially ran disk utility and it told me I had an error and needed to run disk repair, so I did that and fixed the issue. But I am still having this problem.

I don't want to reinstall OSX if I can avoid it, as I only have about 25gbs free on my HD. Ordinarily I would take it to the Apple Store, but I removed my optical drive for another HDD bay when I bought the machine a year and a half ago and am afraid they will refuse to help me.

Look into your logs, see if there is a kernel Panic log, if so report it here.

What Apps do you have installed and running all the time (for instance 'tweaks' to restore the finder sidebar colour icons, or anything like that)?

I am getting no kernel panics on the console. It crashed again just now after I left the machine idle for lunch. I had to force restart it. I usually have mail, safari, Microsoft Word and maybe iTunes running. I don't have any tweaks installed. The machine is freezing regardless of what I do.

I did reinstall Mt Lion, not a clean install but just a reinstall, last night, but that changed nothing.

Here is the last thing on my console before it crashed, but it seems to be different every time

It happened again, but no signs of it in the console. Usually a program I am using quits. Then the icon in the dock will be shown as a generic one if I reclick on it. The beachball starts and the whole system locks up.

One thought: could this mean my RAM is going bad? Activity monitory still shows all of it present. But I cannot find anything else that is explaining this trouble. I just repaired permission on my second internal drive, but I doubt that is what is causing this issue.

I'm using an SSD. My secondary drive is an HDD. What is suggesting the drive is going bad?

I'll run the SMART tester when I get home to see. I hope it's not a bad drive. I haven't backed up in a few weeks.

SMART Utility says my HDs are fine, so it's not the hard drives.

We had another problem a couple weeks ago where it wouldn't boot that we got thru by a safe? boot (can't remember now exactly) and I suspected RAM then.
Now we're having a problem similar to what you describe.

I'm on here trying to figure out how to trouble shoot.

I actually figured it out. I had installed a Crucial M4 SSD a year and a half ago into my MBP and taken out the CD Drive for my HDD.

I went to the Apple Store last night and the Genius ran a diagnostics. He told me my SSD had an error and needed to be wiped, but the drives were not dying, so I went home and did it, only to experience the same problem. I googled Crucial M4 freezing and discovered that because I had not updated its firmware in over a year and used the drive for 5000 hours, it would start doing that.

So, I spent all afternoon taking the MBp apart, inserting the CD drive back in, updating the SSD's firmware and then taking the CDDrive back out again, and everything is back to normal. No freezing, nothing.

Do you have an SSD installed on that machine?

I'm running a Late 2009 mac mini server with 8gb RAM, Lion 10.7.5, and SSD's with my home directory on an external disk.

I'm fairly sure iTunes is the culprit in your case too. I wish I knew why. I'm working on solving this. PM me if you are still interested and I will keep you up to date if I fix it.

Unless you have a Crucial M4 SSD that you installed over a year ago, and didn't update its firmware, I'm pretty sure that you're not having the exact same problem as the OP.

Okay, so mine is fixed. I turned off wireless syncing to my iPad and that fixed it. It started right after I jailbroke my iPad, so that appears to be the issue. The _NotificationSocketReadCallbackGCD error does not seem to be the issue because I'm still getting it although the problem is fixed.
