The new C2D MBP's look very nice, but the main thing that is stopping me from upgrading from my G4 Powerbook is the fact that I spend half my life on planes. The plane adapter thing is a good addition, but a lot of planes don't have power plugs yet so I use an external battery (APC UPB80) and I see no way of hooking that up because of the proprietary Magsafe plug. Anybody have a less drastic way than this:

to power a MBP with some other power tip from the various 3rd-party external power mechanisms out there? I don't mean the car adapter there, just the modified power cable to allow hooking up my external battery.

Also, I see a lot of people complaining about the cable melting near the Magsafe plug. How big of a problem is that and has anything changed in the new version?
