I've got a problem with my Mid 2009 Macbook Pro. When choosing the (better) GPU (NVIDIA GeForce 9600m GT) i get kernel panics which seem to happen quite randomly, but regularly. Yesterday, i tought of gfxCardStatus, with witch i havent had any problems yet, causing the problem. I then quited it, and deleted it from autostart - and the GPU worked the rest of the evening. But this morning even without gfxCardStatus the kernel panic problem is back.

As my bootcamped Windows only runs with the GeForce 9600m GT, the problem also occurs there. The funny thing is, when actually getting a game to start it NEVER crashes. (I play League of Legends and when i am actually ingame i never got a DC/BSOD yet.)

I added a console entry from the kernel panic below:

Code:
Mon Dec 31 10:27:25 2012

Any chance this is some kind of really wierd software bug? Because it really seems to me like the GPU has some major hardware issue.

Glad to hear that...

For me GfxCardStatus updated like 2 weeks ago and then i had a wired session where it wouldnt let me choose the GPU but instead was on "auto switch mode" which i had though impossible, because the mbp 5,3 is manual GPU-choose only. I restarted and it was back to old (just a "switch GPU" Button, no "integrated/discrete"- button). Problems occur since then.

But why do i have the same problems when running windows 7 (when just working with CAD programs i have random kernel panics, sometimes windows starts and immediately crashes again, sometimes it works for hours. How could GfxCardStatus cause problems with windows?

I dunno my panics came up nVidia kexts..I haven't had an issues in the last 2 days 14 hrs and 34 minutes.

As i used my mac today, i had several kernel panics using windows 7 (with completely removed gfxcardstatus). Friend of mine referred to his story of 5-times replacing his logic board. Seems like either the gpu is simply broken or the apple kill switch wants me to buy a new one...

Any other ideas?

BTW: Happy new year!

Sounds like a hardware issue to me if you are getting it in both OSX and Windows.

I have had this for a very long time (more or less since Lion) - most of the times it happens when I put the MBP to sleep or reboot.

I think I have been able to trace my issue down to an issue where it only happens if I reboot or put to sleep in clamshell (ie. external monitor attached).

I called Apple a few weeks ago, as I was getting sick of it, and the answer was to talk to a Service Center, as the MBP is out of support no matter what.

Another thing; I got 8GB memory in it, but I can't remember if it started after or before that.
