Was using my friends i5 MBP doing some film editing in FCE and whilst I was previewing the video to see what it would look like, the speakers all of a sudden went pop.

The sort you would hear when you think the amp has just blown. If I tried increasing/decreasing the audio it would make a crackling-pop like noise. When I muted the audio, it would do the same.

There was no audio coming from the speakers, when I tried playing any videos w/ audio it would just continuing crackling/popping.

Is this the same problem that I've read from previous MBP's where a restart or plugging in some headphones into the jack would resolve the problem?
