Like many others, I am waiting for the Skylake refresh before buying a new MBP. My current MBP (Mid 2010 15-inch, dual core i5) is starting to show its age despite upgrading the RAM a few years ago to 8gb. I'm thinking of getting the current mid-tier Mac Mini (base model) to hold me over for now. The Mac Mini seems underpowered compared to the current rMBP line, but how will it compare to my current setup?

I use my current MBP for photo editing (LR5, Photoshop) and music production (Ableton, Logic). It still works reasonably well (somewhat sluggish), but can get bogged down quickly when handling large batches of images or sample-heavy audio tracks. Portability is not an issue for me right now, and I already have a nice display and necessary peripherals.

My other option is to replace the current hard drive with an SSD. Are either of these options worth the price to upgrade? Or will the practical differences be minimal enough to just save my money and wait for the refresh? Thanks for your feedback!
