MBP mid 2012 15" line in audio

I am trying to use the line in port on my MBP mid 2012. I connected a 3.5mm stereo jack to the line in port. In system preferences -> sound I selected the Line In for input. I can see the audio source volume levels change in the input level bars. No audio out (usb speakers). Any suggestions?

Found this Apple discussion.

The input is stereo; only the internal mic is mono. However even if there is audio coming into the input you won't hear it on the computer unless you have a recording program running (or something like linein)

Started GarageBand, monitored input, all is well.
