hi All, I have had it from two different Apple Store techies a different answer to my question.

Is my Mac Book Pro 15" Mid 2012 fitted with USB 3 ?

And how do I find out ?

I have a USB3 "My Passport" 2TB portable drive which has a USB3 input socket, the cable it came with has a USB 2 plug on the other end, so it can be used on a computer with only USB2, making it downward compatible .

So please do MacBookPro's with USB3 have a USB3 socket in them which will not accept a USB2 plug ?.

Has anybody got an explanation please ?

Tim

Apple Logo in the top Left of your Menubar -> About This Mac -> System Report -> USB -> If you have USB 3.0 it will say it in this submenu.

You have the specs here : http://support.apple.com/kb/SP649?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

So yes, you have USB 3 ports, and you can plug USB 2 plugs into them.

It will work at USB 2 speed.

USB 2 - USB 3 Compatibility :

Host USB 3.0 // Cable USB 2.0 // Peripheral USB 2.0 : OK
Host USB 2.0 // Cable USB 2.0 // Peripheral USB 3.0 : OK
Host USB 2.0 // Cable USB 3.0 // Peripheral USB 3.0 : OK
Host USB 3.0 // Cable USB 3.0 // Peripheral USB 2.0 : NO

I have read only here... no first hand experience, but thought it was worth sharing. From my understanding, the first USB device you plug in will "pin" the usb speed on the port. So, if you plug a usb 2.0 device in, all usb devices will negotiate at 2.0 speeds. I have also read this can be corrected with a prom reset.
