i have the base model MBP mid 2014 with retina and it’s been great to me but is in poor physical condition and have been wanting a new MacBook. Do you guys think I should upgrade. The new MacBook Air has about the same specs as the newer base model MBP and has Touch ID and better battery which is a huge selling point for me. Do you think I should make the upgrade? Why or why not?

I suspect the performance will be about the same. The MBPro can likely support long sustained bursts, but it's a few generations behind and so will lose some codec hardware support.
I wouldn't do anything yet until we have full specs and benchmarks.
