Long story short I discovered you can upgrade the older MBP to 16 GB even though officially they support 8.

I went out today and bought the crucial kit with two 8 gig modules. When I installed it my MBP wouldn’t boot, I got a blank screen but the heartbeat LED was solid lit.

I did some swapping around and the only combination I could get to work was 8 gig and one 4 gig for a total of 12.

I also downloaded the SML and EMI updater apps and they both said not compatible with my system. From what I’ve read that either means I’m already at the current versions or possibly something else?

Any ideas?

Why did you make another thread?

Start by telling us what Mac you actually have.

One of the 8gb modules is faulty
I agree with this comment. I have an old 2010 MBP lying around with the 16GB Crucial RAM upgrade and it still works fine. Computer recognized it right away without any modifications.

Yes - You have not said which screen size you have (?) (2.66 GHz is the only speed with all 3 screen sizes)
Sorry, 13"

I tried the ram in a windows PC and it worked fine. I think the problem is the speed, its 1600. the OWC kit is 1066.

I think would i install one new and one old it just throttles down. When I add 2 need 1600 dimms It freaks out..

I am going to return them and already ordered the OWC kit

Ah yeah, that's definitely your issue. 2010 MBP needs 1066MHz.
