I have a budget of about $2,000 to spend on a new computer around this fall. I use my computer for primarily two things, one being general "Carl the consumer" activities like web browsing, email, light games and watching movies.
The other is using Logic for recording, and soon, mixing and mastering.
Obviously I will be needing something with some power to handle all of the plugins associated with mixing 20-30 tracks per song. I currently own a MBP from late 2007 that has been great for me, but lately Logic has been giving me errors about not being able to handle everything I am doing.
My question is, would it be worth me getting an iMac for the heavy stuff and keeping my MBP around for traveling, or replacing the MBP with a new one? (keeping in mind that if i get a new laptop, I can sell this one and get some money back, whereas by buying the iMac, I would need to keep this laptop around)
For the iMac, I would be getting a 27" (possibly the quad core, if it was worth it) and for the MBP I would be getting the base 15"
As a side note, I would be interested in increasing the performance of my current machine. I never had the hangup problem in Logic before, and I know that my battery is on it's last limb. I know that if you use the power on these without battery, it only uses one core. Is it possible that my battery is so bad that it is using one core all the time now? The battery will last about 30 minutes off the AC power.
Sorry for the long post, thanks in advance.
