Will, if I buy a MBP now, be able to upgrade to mountain lion without losing all of my data?

Yes.

But you should back up your data nonetheless.

Updates can be a rocky road sometimes.

Yes, apple has been providing a solid upgrade solution with operating systems for years. Its even more seamless with Lion and beyond.

Regardless you still need a good back up strategy, stuff happens, not just during upgrades.
