[MBP OS X 10.7.1] Computer won't restart after software update

Hello..

I am trying to update on my Macbook pro 2.66 ghz i7 8gb ram .. I press restart computer and install updates once software update instructs me to but the computer does not restart. This led me to also realize that if I click the apple in the top left of the screen none of the commands: log out, restart, shutdown will work. I currently have to hold down the power button and force power off..

Any ideas or help??

bump for have to force shutdown my computer or have to close the lid because I cannot use commands from os x interface such as via the apple on top left or 1-tapping the power button to bring up shutdown/logout/etc commands.....

could use some help would rather not reinstall os.
