Hello. I just got a new (refurb) Macbook Pro 2018 model with touch bar (i5 and 16 gb of ram if this matter and macOS 10.14.2). When streaming I have noticed a very fast drain of the battery and the fan that start spinning quite loud, with the keyboard area becoming quite hot (not sure how hot, still is noticeable). For example today I watched a 40 min episode on Chrome and the battery went from 97% to 35%, now that looks too much! Refurb macs should have a brand new battery, isn't? I also have noticed how the battery of my MBP is draining much faster if compared to the MBP of my brother (he got a 2017 non TB model but brand new). About the fan I'm wondering if is not the case to open it for clean the internals and maybe replace the thermal paste? The MBP have 1 month of life...

Any suggestions?

Thank you for all the answers!!!

The nonTB will last longer...

Try using Safari instead of Chrome to view the videos and report back on battery life. Open activity monitor and you can see what apps are using the most power under the 'Energy' tab

I second the suggestion to try out safari. chrome is notorious for using a lot of ram and CPU. I only keep chrome around for those few websites which don’t seem to work well in safari.

Chrome is a huge memory hog, I would rather use Chrome but Apple made Safari more stable being imbedding into the OS.

When you click the battery icon on the menu bar which applications does it say are using significant energy?

I had a strange occurrence of swift battery drain due to the Finder window using significant energy. That seemed strange but a reboot cleared the issue and it hasn't returned.

Hi guys! Thanks for all the answers. I will try to use Safari, even if I'm honest, I prefer Chrome... About the battery I have tried to follow the procedure described on Apple support page to reboot the SMC and the situation seem improved, at least for the fan, now not spinning at all. I will test it few more days tho...

Chrome and Safari.

Is your model the 13" or the 15"? These new 2018's pack a lot of power into a slim design, and when you're watching videos, you are using the processor, graphics card, and the screen is usually nice and bright, and the speakers are booming too. All of those things use energy, and they also create a lot of heat. I hear the fans on my 2018 15" more than I have ever before on my old MBP's, but I really don't care. The fans don't bother me at all - they're doing their job.

However, the battery drain that you describe sounds way too high.

The first thing that I would do is restart the computer and use Safari. If you continue to have issues, I would highly recommend that you enter recovery mode, wipe the hard drive, and reinstall the OS.

If that does not solve your issues, I would highly recommend sending the laptop to Apple for diagnostics and repair. DO NOT open the device. That will void your one-year warranty faster than you can say "I just ruined my warranty".
