MBP - previous generation vs. new

I am a college student on a tight budget debating between buying new MBP 15inch and the previous generation 15inch MBP. I will be using it to run FCS along with adobe aftereffects and color.

-Is the performance of the new MBP worth the price? even when compared to refurbished MBPs?

-What about the lack of matte option along with no FW 400 port?

the new MBP does have a firewire port. cant say much about anything else though. i'm in the same boat.
