It seems to be some power-saving or screen-saving technique. But is it really worth it? My ACD doesn't get dimmer. Is the MBP screen any different? I do have both displays turning off after 5 minutes of inactivity.

MBP screen gets about half as bright after about a minute - can I stop that?

In your system preferences, I think under the "options" section in energy saver theres a check box for "automatically reduce screen brightness before sleep". I would think that should stop your screen dimming.
It is there to help save battery life, it shouldn't matter on the power adapter though.

^Indeed. Go into your energy saver and change the settings if you don't want the screen to dim.
