My MBP (model MacBookPro3,1) recently has been shutting off intermittently without any cause or reason. This only occurs when it is not plugged in. It occurs without any regard to the battery level, although it usually occurs when the battery is below 60%. What could be the cause of this (especially the fact that this only occurs when not plugged in)? Do I need a new battery?

Not sure about it's cause but have you tried resetting the SMC? It could help.

exactly samething happened to my mid 2007 Macbook with Apple care. So I went to my local mac store and told the issue, straight on they replaced the battery and the problem was solved.

Resetting the SMC did not solve the problem. I guess I'm going to have to get a new battery.
