I'm considering investing in speakers for my MBP, and websites refer to laptops with 'good' built in speakers and 'bad' ones. I think that the built in speakers are decent for music, but how do they compare to other computers? Would $50 or $100 speakers be a significant sound improvement or is the sound already high quality?

The sound in the MBP is decent for laptop speakers, but that's all I can say for it. Even a $30 set of computer speakers will destroy it. There is simply no room for decent drivers, or even large enough drivers to handle the lower octaves. Your best bet is to pick up a small intergrated amp like this:

And then some decent bookshelf speakers, and you should be doing far better than even what computer speaker sets are capable of.
