MBP sound turns on automatically after starting up

Hello,
I updated my MBP to 10.6 recently and I noticed that my laptop's audio turns on automatically every time I boot the machine. The sound is turned on to max. when I turn it on even if I mute it before shutting down.

Is there a way to fix this?

Reset your PRAM, then when you first boot up the computer afterwards, set the volume to mute, then restart. This solved the problem for me.
