Hi everybody,
an acquaintance of mine states he bought a MBP with a 256 SSD at a physical Apple Store.
Can this be true? I thought customizations were allowed only if the order took place on the Apple Store online!

Why not simply call the Apple store and ask?

And out of sheer boredom--why do you even care?

Normally they are not available in the stores, but certain of the higher volume markets have been known to have a few different configurations in the store (than is the normal offered fare). Your best bet is to go into the store near you and ask. I would say never call as in my experience it seems they tell you whatever you want to hear to get you in the store. I have been told untruths many times when calling in by phone. For this reason, I always ask the employees name so I can hold them to it when it isn't true. Managers never like to hear that their employees are lying to the customers.

Good point, I have been told strange things sometimes too when calling. Good to know they sometimes keep some popular configurations. :)
