Well, I just had a scare with my MBP. Apparently when I plugged in my headphones last night I hit the internal switch in the headphone port that makes it think that there is an S/PDIF plug inserted. When the headphones were in, they were also tripping the headphone switch so I got sound, but when they were out I could see a red light emanating from the headphone port and the internal speakers were not available from the sound preferences panel.
I tried inserting and removing the headphone jack, resetting the PRAM, and restarting a few times effect. Eventually, on the verge of desperation, I inserted and removed the headphone jack a few times trying to wiggle the switch loose. Eventually, the red light disappeared and all is well now.
I'm not terribly concerned right now, but I'll definitely be monitoring it whenever I use my headphones to see if I just got lucky or if it's a systemic problem.
