MBP + Thunderbolt display delay in waking

I have a 2011 17in map hooked up to a thunderbolt display. It takes a good 2 minutes to get it to wake up from sleep and I usually have to unplug the thunderbolt cable once or twice to do the trick. Any ideas?

Try resetting the SMC for the MacBook Pro to see if that helps. Does the MBP wake from sleep OK if the TB display is not attached?
