MBP to external monitor - Help!

I have a external monitor hooked up to my MBP. I want OS X to handle this monitor like Windows does.

Basically, when plugged in, I want my external monitor to be up and running, while my laptop's display is completely passive (no image or function).

Can this be done? I've tried doing it though "Arrangement" but it wasn't what I was looking for

Only way I know how is to shut the lid and the monitor will go off.

Can I do this and have the display on my laptop open? I'm worried about heat if I have it closed.

all that you have to do is close the lid and put it into sleep and then you plug your external monitor in and wake the computer up with an external mouse and key board. after that you can open the lid if your worried about heat..

That's not a bad idea.

It's just that sometimes I lose my pointer in my MBP screen haha
