MBP to LCD tv not showing

Hey so i am hooking up my 15" macbook pro to my 26" lg lcd tv, it works ish, but it does not recognize on the tv that the pc input is in use, and the colours are quite a bit different, the picture is considerably darker. Any one have any idea why or how?

No i am not, when i close the lid it shuts off the picture. I ran this setup for like a year with my old macbook and a vga to mini dvi adapter and it showed it and ran fine, now i have the vga to mini display port.

when you close the lid, your macbook goes to sleep. wake it up my plugging a usb device in and be sure to have the charger pugged in.
