So so disheartened after spending half an hour meticulously detailing my problem only to lose the post when I tried to publish the thread cos I'd been automatically logged out.

AAAAAAAAAAAAnyway

I hooked my 2008 Mac Book Pro up to my Sony nsx-40gt1 tv via HDMI + DVI adaptor. My 2008 computer doesn't have DVI mini port.

The picture/desktop appears on the TV no problem, but the audio only outputs from the laptop speakers.

Do I need these cables:

A guy on youtube located his TV though System Preferences>Sound>Output
and then located his TV, which I have been unable to do.

really, we talking about early or late 2008 MBP? Or is it both?

Both. It wasn't until the mid or late 2010 models that the audio was able to be routed through the display port cable, and those were all MDP by that time (the earl 2008 was mini-DVI, late MDP). DVI can't carry audio anyway.
