i've got a macbook pro unibody
the october 08 ones

and basically of the two usb ports
the lower one is working fine
but the top one is acting a bit funny

if i put my mouse or graphics tablet in there it doesnt work
but if i put my phone or usb drive in there they work perfectly

not sure what other tests to do or what it could be and wondering if anyone has any ideas??

Are you using the original AC adapter that came with the computer?

Does the lower one act funny even with nothing plugged into the top one?

What kind of phone? iPhone?

Do you have AppleCare? That sounds like a logic board issue. Time to call AppleCare.

Good luck,

Both of my USB ports are funny. Sometimes they work.. Sometimes they dont.

It usually is with External Hard Drives... I have to plug them in and out a bunch of times before OSX will reckognize.

the usb ports on the macbook's and pro's can share usb power, there is 1000mah between them.

the list in the profiler as 500 per port but can be shared , if you plug in a power hungry device it can steal all the power from the other device.

this was recently done on the unibody's....not sure why.

One of the macbook pro's usb ports isn't fully powered as it runs the webcam etc from it. I expect this is your problem.

thanks everyone for the replies

yeah im using the original ac adapter

no the bottom one is completely fine

not iphone, blackberry, so basically mass storage device

i would have thought something like a mouse would hardly need any power at all
it doesnt work even with nothing in the bottom (working fine) usb
so i dont think its to do with the power being shared between the 2 ports

i have applecare fortunately, so might have to resort to that..

but this has never happened before, just recently so i dont think its to do with one being less powered as it would have been like this all the time no?
