MBP USB-C Dock not Recognized Sometimes

I have a MBP with the control strip and 4 USB-C ports. I also use it with a OWC USB-C dock. Sometimes, when I plug in the dock, it's not recognized. I don't hear any beep and none of the dock hard appears on the Mac. If I then unplug it and plug it into a different USB-C port, it's recognized and all it well. Does anyone else ever have this issue? I am wondering if this is normal or something is wrong with the Mac or the dock. I also had a Dell USB-C dock and the same thing happened with that. So I don't think it's the dock itself. Could it be that the laptop is asleep when I plug it in since the cover is closed and it doesn't wake up? Even if I would open it, it still doesn't recognize that it is plugged in.
