Hi

Having been very use to my 27" iMac I am looking to see if I can get away with just using my 2018 MBP 13". I'm a Logic user primarily and want decent screen real estate.

I'm considering the following and would welcome people's experiences/suggestions.

LG 4k Ultrafine - possibly a bit small and no integrated camera
LG 5k Ultrafine - expensive but has good resolution and the camera
Some Ultrawide 34" curved monitor - the LG ones look really good and are all less than the LG 5k.

As I'm also trialling the BlackMagic eGPU (but don't let that change your views) - I'm also interested in future monitors that might be just around the corner, although rumours seem thin on the ground on this front.

Other things I'd like USBC (definitely), Integrated FaceTime Camera (probably)

Over to you...

I’ve also gone entirely 13” 2018 from a 27” iMac and 13” 2016 setup, and I’m also a Logic user.

I picked up a 4K Uktrafine refurb on eBay for £300, and couldn’t be happier with it - at that price. I wouldn’t have paid full price for it, though, as it and the 5K are crazy overpriced, IMO.

Thanks. Do you use the screen at default scaling?

I also just picked up a refurb 4k ultrafine. I (think) I’m using it on the second highest scaling option. I was going to go with an ultrawide, but the display’s being non-retina was a deal breaker. Sure, the 22” is a bit small in the era of 27” 5k screens, but for what I paid ($225.00), and the ability to add a second one for just a bit more made it a no-brainer.

The 5k is ultrafine (even as a refurb) is a bit overpriced in my opinion. Even if it is a gorgeous display. You can get nearly 3 of the 4k for the same price.

That’s a good approach so two 4K screens rather than one 5k. MacBook 13” fine to drive that many?

According to Apple:

  • Up to two displays with 4096-by-2304 resolution at 60Hz at millions of colors

That’s from the tech specs page on the 2018 13” MacBook Pro. I have a 2018 15” and it runs perfectly fine, but of course that has the dedicated card in it. I think if you ran it in clamshell mode you should be fine with those screens.

Also, this is how I'm running my single 4k currently. As I mentioned before I'll add a second one soon and then run the Pro in clamshell mode. Until then, this works very well (for me).

edit: my desk and monitor are straight. My picture, however, is not ;)
